The challenge

Homelessness in Malta is more than a housing issue. It represents a loss of dignity, stability, and safety for hundreds of people every day. Behind closed doors and city streets, more individuals and families are slipping into hidden homelessness, living in temporary accommodation, cars, or unsafe conditions.

The rising cost of living, limited access to affordable housing, and growing social inequality have pushed many to the edge. What was once considered rare has become a daily reality for far too many.

The Reality in Numbers

  • 405 people were referred for shelter in 2025. Of those referred. 51% were Maltese nationals, 28% were non-EU nationals and 11% were EU nationals (YMCA Malta, 2025).

  • An average of 60 people a day visited the YMCA Drop-in Centre in Hamrun in 2025 (YMCA Malta, 2025)

  • In 2024, there was a 58.4% increase in minors and an 18.2% increase in people aged 60+ seeking shelter (YMCA, 2025).

What we do
Home Bound was created to turn compassion into action. Our mission is to bring awareness, assistance, and sustainable support to those affected by homelessness in Malta. We focus on four key areas:
Awareness
Breaking the stigma and silence surrounding homelessness by sharing stories, raising visibility, and sparking meaningful dialogue.
Assistance
Helping individuals and families access safe shelter, food, and social services through partnerships with local organisations.
Community Support
Working alongside the YMCA and other partners to build more shelters, improve existing facilities, and create trauma-informed spaces for young people and families.
Events
We use movement, both physical and collective, as a powerful tool for awareness and change. Through endurance challenges, we create a platform that inspires action, raises funds, and amplifies the voices of those experiencing homelessness.
